Secret cinema found beneath Paris

In September 2004, French police discovered a hidden chamber in the catacombs under Paris. It contained a full-sized movie screen, projection equipment, a bar, a pressure cooker for making couscous, a professionally installed electricity system, and at least three phone lines. Movies ranged from 1950s noir classics to recent thrillers.

When the police returned three days later, the phone and power lines had been cut and there was a note on the floor: “Do not try to find us.” (via)

Day 6: What is your favorite piece that you’ve knit?

I wish I had a picture… A super sweet sweater right out of the pages of “Tacky Sweaters Weekly” (if such a magazine existed)

I used bright DK yarn and every fair-isle motif I could find and combined them to create a bright super-dork cardigan. It’s my winter go-to.

Maybe I can take a picture and post it later after work. If I remember…

Day 7: Your least favorite?

I tried to knit a skirt from an issue of Knit Digest but I swapped out the yarn/needle size and tried to make it work with sport weight hemp and it was just TOO tight and not flattering.

I hate it when you see something that looks awesome in the magazine and then when you finish and try it on you realize that you’re a totally different shape…

Ugh. I still need to frog that so that it doesn’t sit in a drawer and depress me from afar. Maybe I can turn it into a shopping bag.

My 30 days of yarn may be spread out over several months. (But nobody said which days they had to be!)

So here are three-in-one.

Do you have any other WIP’s?

Always. Two afghans, a few pairs of socks, and strange granny squares just laying about waiting to strike up some inspiration… but they aren’t the important ones.

Plus, there’s always a half-written pattern laying about somewhere with a wonked-out swatch that badly needs to be frogged and re-assessed seven times until it actually looks like it’s what it’s supposed to.

But then, isn’t that life?

And, to cop out on the next two days:

How did you learn how to knit?

And

How long did it take from the time your learned how to knit, to finish your first project?

I… uh. I seem to accidentally answered those when I tackled Day One. So there!

Work of art!

When I was seven, and my grandmother taught me how to knit, I used her leftover yarn to make coasters as practice. So my first finished project was definitely a coaster of some kind — probably in a bright color, and definitely garter stitch.

The reason I can’t remember is that I kept on spewing out coaster after coaster, until we had five times the number of coasters that we actually had drinks in the house.

I used up all her leftover yarn from projects, and she had to start buying me big balls of acrylic from the store so that I wouldn’t try to turn her cashmere into coasters.

After about a year, I had an entire closet full of these sad, acrylic, garter-stitch coasters, that had never actually lived out their purpose.

That was my problem. I couldn’t let anyone actually use the coasters because I was too afraid they would leave sticky juice or tea on them. Gran tried to tell me they were washable but I stacked them all away in my closet, in neat little piles, where they would never get hurt or sticky.

So, like I said, after about a year, Gran finally told me I had to do something with the coasters. She said I either had to start using them, or I had to frog them and knit them into something useful. Which is fair, she didn’t give me that yarn or teach me to knit so that I could shove it into a closet and forget about it.

I laid them all out on the bed, and I couldn’t figure out what to do. I couldn’t decide which to keep and which to frog… Which is when Gran had an idea that solved the issue completely: She went and got two darning needles and a ball of acrylic, and we sat and watched old movies and began to sew all the squares together.

All in all, it took us another three months of old Bogart and Hepburn films to actually piece the entire blanket together, but we did it.

So that’s the first thing I ever knit, I guess. A coaster, and then a lot of coasters, and then a beautifully mis-matched patchy blanket, that I still have to this day.
